I feel like a human being again! I have to admit that I did kind of knit myself out over the weekend, but the good thing about this was that it enabled me to do some much needing cleaning up around the house: I emptied the dishwasher, wiped down the counters, cleaned off the dining table, cleaned out the fridge, sorted and put away (or into the laundry) all the clothes lying around the bedroom, sorted all my knitting stuff, went through all the mail, paid bills and balanced my check book!
All this felt SOOOO good. My husband was a little taken aback by this sudden attack of domesticity but it really was a long time coming. Then and again, I can't even remember when I had a day at home to do this stuff, we've been so busy at the weekends lately.
It really helped that I got a lot of knitting time on our trip - we went to Williamsburg, Virginia to visit my husband's recently retired former boss and his wife in their new retirement home, flying out Friday morning and returning Sunday morning. We had a fantastic time. They have a beautiful house and were great hosts - both really like to talk and have lots of stories from their 41 years of marriage with three kids and now almost 2 grandkids (one is due in August). And it was so great to see them enjoying retirement so much. They reminded me of my parents as they are very active and have a whole gang of new best friends that they have met down there. Both have the kind of life and relationship I would like to have in 35 years or so.
(I know the wood photo is disproportionately large but I like it! And didn't have a partner for it...)
On Friday we took a stroll in historic Williamsburg. That night they cooked a great dinner of grilled steak, grilled chicken, fresh corn, baked potatoes and salad, and after dinner I had fun trying my hand out on their piano, badly sightreading sappy songs from the 80s (when their kids had piano lessons and bought sheet music) and earlier.
On Sunday we were treated to a breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausages and pancakes. There's nothing like scrambled eggs when done right. Then we went to Norfolk and were treated to an early dinner cruise and not only was the food really good but so was the weather. We relaxed with dessert on the upper deck and it truly felt like vacation.
It's so great to get away, even if only for a short trip like this. It's so refreshing. And actually, I was pretty restrained about the knitting, only knitting around our hosts for a little bit on Saturday evening.
Oh yeah, I really want us to put a fireplace in the house - they have one and it did get chilly in the evenings and it was the best. If I can knit by the fireplace on winter evenings I could pretend I was retired already! All that would be missing would be a rocking chair...
