I started knitting a couple of months ago on a whim. Ok, neither of those things are strictly accurate. I learned to knit when I was little but I remember neither learning or actually knitting anything, yet somehow I reached adulthood knowing how to knit and so did my sister. My mother knit, so she must have taught us but none of us can remember if we actually completed any projects.
My sister-in-law knits, so a couple of years ago, when she brought some knitting with her to a family event, I asked to knit a few rows. And when, just over a year ago, she asked me what she could get me for Christmas, I suggested she pick out some beginning knitting things. She gave me a Susan Bates starter kit complete with two sets of needles, some other tools, and a how-to booklet with patterns, as well as a ball of black acrylic yarn and a couple of balls of a nice mohair.
So when I say "whim" two months ago, it was a whim I was prepared for when I all of a sudden thought one Sunday night, I'm going to knit!
I could remember, literally, how to knit but I had to be reminded of how cast on and how to purl as well as everything from there out. I wanted something more interesting than black and I wasn't prepared to tackle the mohair, so I googled knitting stores in New York, found the nearest one to my office, and made my first visit to a yarn store - Gotta Knit.
Gotta Knit is a small, second floor operation. Having never been to a yarn store, I wasn't sure what to expect. I was a little disappointed with the small collection but the staff were friendly and helpful and suggested a variegated or self-striping yarn to start, so as to keep interest. I settled on Tonalita from Trendsetter Yarns and chose Mossy Tree as a beautiful but boy-friendly color as I was thinking my first scarf would be for my husband, but that I could always keep it for myself if he didn't like it. Actually, one of the reasons I kind of had this in my head was because the scarf I wanted to knit from the Susan Bates book was "his scarf", more interesting than "her scarf" because it featured a cable.
The yarn was gorgeous, especially compared with the acrylic, and pretty soon I was completely addicted.
